It's Nazia Hassan's ninth death anniversary today. For those of you who don't know who she is, Nazia has been hailed by some as Pakistan's first pop queen. She made her musical debut at fifteen, with her brother Zoheb, and the sibling duo made a big splash on sub-continental charts with their album 'Disco Deewane'. Nazia's career as a singer was somewhat abbreviated by marriage and, from what I know, she moved to England soon after. Her death, just a few years later, came as an unexpected shock for her many fans and admirers. The facts surrounding her death are fairly murky. I remember hearing stories of domestic abuse, and unhappy marriages and - possibly - the speculation that Nazia's death was fairly expedious for her husband. Her death has been attributed to everything from slow poison to breast cancer. Whatever the truth-may-be, the fact remains that Pakistan lost a beautiful voice nine years ago but her legacy, in the shape of songs that are still popularly hummed, lives long after she has gone.

I found some of my favorite Nazia Hassan songs on youtube. Enjoy:
